Welcome.
Are you feeling a little lost? Do you feel as if you are wandering aimlessly? Is there a sense of ‘I know where I want to be, but I keep ending up somewhere completely different’? Life passing by without ever seeming to get anywhere or accomplish anything worthwhile? This is a feeling shared by many at this time. And there are those who have faithfully followed what seemed to be sound spiritual guidance, often for many years, led on by words that promise an ‘awakening’, an ‘enlightenment’, the promise of a New Age dawning within a few years time. A mind can only sustain hope for so long without any obvious movement towards that which is desired. And so we are reaching the Time of Disillusionment. Many will fall by the wayside. I am reminded of the Parable of the Sower. Many seeds will fall on rocks and germinate full of enthusiasm for life only to find that there is nothing to nurture their potential. Others will root on marginal soil and start to grow only to be smothered by brambles that are better able to survive by being bullies, and some seed will fall on fertile soil and grow and produce a rich harvest. In the parable the seed is the words of wisdom or guidance, and the soil is the receptiveness of the mind to those ideas. I would like you to consider a different viewpoint.
I would like to consider that you are the seed.
Just ponder on that thought for a moment or two before continuing.
Next time you are in a wild place have a look around. In the most difficult situations plants will grow. You can see them on brick walls, you can see them on rocks, in the mountains, in highly salty conditions at the seaside. They even grow in pure sand on the beach. Many of you will have visited a place of sand dunes. Here lives a grass that grows well in pure salty sand and holds the dunes in place, but little else tolerates the shifting sand. This Marram grass actually modifies its environment and holds the sand in place with its roots so that it isn’t overwhelmed. Other plants that can’t do this get covered by the shifting sands. Look closely at the plants that succeed where others fail. Notice what’s special about them. Fleshy leaves in waterless places hold onto moisture. Large leaves gather small amounts of light in dark forests. Small size reduces moisture loss in windy or otherwise inhospitable places.
Just consider that you are the seed of a very special plant.
Do you know what conditions you need to thrive?
Do you have them?
If you are as I described in the beginning, then you clearly do not. If you are not thriving then you are growing in the wrong place. Now parables are a nice way of expressing an idea, but they always have limits. Plants can’t uproot themselves and move to a better location. People can. But plants can change their local environment. Look at how desertification, or flooding and massive soil erosion results from deforestation if you want to see how plants affect environment. So you always have the power to change your home, your desk, your office… If you do not feel comfortable with what you see around you, change what you can. For what all the promises, all of the teachings, claim is that they will lead you to happiness/bliss/joy/peace and so on. That can only be experienced in one location. Within your own mind. So if your world does not reflect back to you happiness/bliss/joy/peace then start to investigate ways, even small ways, in which you can start to bring that about.
Your world, I have always taught, is the mirror of your mind. If what you see outside of yourself does not reflect what you seek, then do not consider that your path is wrong, consider that your thinking is mistaken. It does not matter where you make the changes. You can make them inside your mind or out in the world. The world is just a symbol anyway.
Until next time seek to make small changes in your immediate environment that reflect the ideas that are important to you. And when you are out and about observe in detail those plants that grow in difficult places.
Have fun. You really are supposed to be enjoying yourselves here.
With Love
