Cases of Spirit and Distant Healing (8) A third
healing method. Healing the Environment. Paranormal
communication. St. Cuthbert (continued)

There’s a third type of healing activity which I
failed to mention earlier. As well as going into a
state of prayer and meditation for general healing, or
focusing on each person requesting individual healing,
there is another aspect of healing which does not
originate from our own activity at all. It is the
chief component of mediumship and spirit contact.
They call us, we don’t call them! This is the
spontaneous wake-up call that comes to us any time of
the day or night (as illustrated in the
semi-fictional/semi-documentary TV series “Medium” and
Ghost Whisperer.”) Whether we’re awake or dreaming,
we become aware through some form of second sight or
hearing, or feeling, that someone is in need. We may
see their face, feel that something is wrong, see a
healing taking place for a person, or even see the
scene of an accident, or up-coming event in our mind’s
eye. We make a note of the impressions and details
and feel compelled to contact the person or persons
concerned, involved or related, if at all possible.
It may be a personal message or warning for
ourselves, so in that case we can take action at once.
For example, I have avoided a road accident when out
driving with my daughters. This type of impression
comes out of nowhere, and as it has occurred to me
quite often, I thought I would mention it. It is
necessary to be ever-aware and vigilant, for oneself
and on behalf of the welfare and well-being of others.

Though Cuthbert lived in seclusion on the remote
island of Farne, he continued his healing work.
Though like him we should take practical measures to
put out fires, rescue ships in distress and control
pests, we might make our environment more friendly
and benign if we had a more prayerful attitude,
following St. Cuthbert’s example. By talking to the
birds who were scavenging and destroying his crops he
kept them under control, unlike Chairman Mao who had
all sparrows killed one year when they were damaging
crops. The next year, China was plagued by locusts!
Similarly when in the great leap forward to
industrialize the country, Mao neglected agriculture,
300 million Chinese starved to death. During the
Cultural Revolution he sent hundreds of thousands of
intellectuals and dissidents back to work on the land,
thus retarding China’s commercial, technological and
academic development for two decades.
If we don’t pray or attune to spirit, there is
lack of balance in our everyday lives. A respectful,
prayerful attitude keeps thing in balance. This is
much needed in world affairs, don’t you think?
Perhaps too, using food crops to produce alternative
sources of energy is going to cause inflation of food
prices, and starvation on a large scale. A better
balance would come from energy conservation, and
cutting back on travel and transportation and
out-sourcing, and curbing world trade and the
activities of these out-of-control international
conglomerates by returning to more practical and less
costly local and regional self-sufficiency. That
would mean plentiful and healthy food, and jobs for
everyone! Over-fishing, and other large-scale activitiers which deplete our natural, sustainable resources, need to be regulated internationally, as Sir Alister Hardy foresaw almost a hundred years ago.
Some of the sick back in Cuthbert’s time were
healed by merely touching something formerly owned or
used by him. There was one Abbess named Elfled who
for some time was near death with a serious illness.
She gradually recovered, however, but was still unable
to walk upright until she was given a linen girdle of
Cuthbert’s. She put it on, and the next morning was
able to stand upon her feet, and within a couple of
days was restored to perfect health. “A few days
after, one of the nuns of the same monastery was taken
ill with a violent pain in the head; and whilst the
complaint became so much worse that she thought she
should die, the venerable abbess went in to see her.
Seeing her sorely afflicted, she brought the girdle of
the man of God to her, and bound it round her head.
The same day the pain in the head left her, and she
laid up the girdle in her chest. The abbess wanted it
again a few days after, but it could not be found
either in the chest or anywhere else. It was at once
perceived that Divine Providence had so ordered it,
that the sanctity of the man of God might be
established by these two miracles, and all occasion of
doubting thereof be removed from the incredulous.
[Apparently there were sceptics even in those days!]
For if the girdle had remained, all those who were
sick would have gone to it, and whilst some of them
would be unworthy of being cured, its efficacy to cure
might have been denied, whereas their own unworthiness
would have been to blame.”
Eventually the Abbess Alfled met Cuthbert by
arrangement further south along the North-East coast
on the island of Coquet. There he answered many of
her questions and predicted that her brother King
Egfrid would die within a year’s time [he was killed
in battle with the Picts], that King Alfred, whom he
saw clairvoyantly in exile on a Scottish island
studying science and literature, would succeed him,
and that he himself would become Bishop of
Lindisfarne, which position he reluctantly accepted,
but only after King Egfrid himself sailed to the
island of Farne to secure his agreement.
When on the way back to his island after an
interview with Bishop Eata at Melrose Abbey, Cuthbert
was asked by one of King Elfrid’s attendants to stop
and give benediction at his house. One of his
servants was gravely ill, in great pain, his
extremities seemingly dead, and himself barely being
able to breathe. “Cuthbert immediately blessed some
water, and gave it to a servant, telling him ‘Go and
give it to the sick man to drink.’ In obedience to
those words the servant brought the water to the sick
man, and when he poured it into his mouth the third
time, the sick man, contrary to his usual custom, fell
asleep. He passed the night in silence, and in the
morning appeared quite well when his master visited
him.”
When he became Bishop of Lindisfarne, Cuthbert
performed his duties in a most caring and generous
way, though continuing to lead a frugal and prayerful
life himself in the midst of all the requisite
activities of a demanding office. Miracles, phenomena
and healings continued to take place around him. The
next year, on his way to visit the Abbess Elfled, he
stopped by the walls of the town. “Suddenly, as he was
resting on his staff, standing by a well and fountain
built by the Romans, he was disturbed in spirit, and,
turning his countenance sorrowfully to the earth, he
raised himself, and, lifting his eyes to heaven,
groaned loudly, and said in a low voice, [in reference
to King Egfrid’s cruel campaign against the Picts]
‘Now, then, the contest is decided!’ The presbyter,
who was standing near, in incautious haste answered,
and said, ‘How do you know it?’ But he, unwilling to
declare more concerning those things which were
revealed to him, said, ‘Do you not see how wonderfully
the air is changed and disturbed? Who is able to
investigate the judgment of the Almighty?’”
Like Cuthbert, many of us become aware of a
change in atmosphere around the world when some grand
or disastrous event has taken place. We know, as it
happens, before there is any coverage of it in the
media, on cell-phones or the internet, as for example
at Medjugorge, Chernobyl, or the Challenger disaster
(which I felt happen before hearing it on the news.
Exactly at that moment, I felt an urgent need to
perform my meditation practice). Then there was 9/ll
2001. At that very time, I remember Robert Egby
relating to me last year that he was in Glastonbury,
and noticed a shift of vibration around the town. In
fact he was writing about it last night (April 31,
2008) for his new book, which I knew nothing about
until I requested his permission this morning (April
1st 2008) to quote the incident here, only a few hours
after he wrote it. There’s an absolute demonstration
of what I am discussing: picking up information
“paranormally”! I quote from Robert’s e-mail
received today (evening of April 1st, 2008) : “When
the horrors of 9/11 occurred in New York City, my
sister Diane and I were in the ancient town of
Glastonbury in Somerset, England. We had spent a
couple of days there, wandering through the ancient
Abbey ruins, buying books, drinking herbal teas and
looking at all the vegetables, fruits and crafts
offered at the weekly Market. As we checked out of the
olde worlde hotel known as "The George and Pilgrim" we
carried our bags through the hotel into the parking
lot at the rear. It was early afternoon - mid morning
in New York. We stopped by the car and both stared at
the Glastonbury Market. Everyone was moving in slow
motion! It was stunning. The entire canvas of the
Market was shimmering! As if energy, the sunlight,
the vision was being distorted. It seemed to go on for
ages. We estimated thirty seconds.
"What on earth was that?" Diane asked in amazement.
"Spirits?" I asked. "If it was, it was powerful stuff.
It was almost as if something had just sent a ripple
through the Earth's fabric, its consciousness."
Twenty minutes later, as we drove through the narrow
lanes of Somerset, we
heard the news on the BBC. The World Trade Center had
been devastated and
thousands were believed dead.” Excerpted from a
section on “Global Consciousness” from one of Robert Egby’s
recent books.
Incidentally, my wife and I visited
Glastonbury in 2004, touring round in the same way
that you did, our first visit since 1982, 22 years
before. Other paranormal events of a different kind
happened with us on both occasions, which I will write
about at another time.

“Revenant à nos moutons” as they say in
French [getting back to our subject] Cuthbert did not
reveal anything to the Abbess either, but merely asked
her tactfully to check things out back at the palace.
She did so, and found that her brother was indeed
dead, and that Alfred would succeed him as King. The
prophecies were fulfilled.
