Odin hanging from the Yggdrasil
Legend says that Odin captured the Runes and their knowledge after hanging upside down from the Yggdrasil (World Tree) impaled on his own spear for nine days and nights. At the end of his shamanic journey Odin had mastered their knowledge, insight and wisdom giving him power. Odin passed down the knowledge he gained from the Runes to the Goddess Freya and in turn she taught him magic. Later, the knowledge and wisdom of the Runes was bestowed upon mankind by Heimdall, Guardian of the Rainbow Bridge.
During the 3rd century as the Norses and Vikings travelled the world, they brought the runes with them and local tribes quickly adopted the Futhark alphabet. Each of the 24 symbols of the Futhark expressed ideas and thoughts based on their arrangements to each other - forming an early mean of written communication. As time went by the 24 original symbols were modified by the tribes giving birth to several runic alphabets and more recently a blank rune was added to form the modern set of 25 runes that we now use.
Many of these tribes introduced these symbols in their rituals and their shaman/medicine man used the runes as a divination and decision making tool.
The word “rune” means “magic”, “mystery”, “whisper” or “secret”. The Ancient Norse, Celts and Vikings believed that they were a mean of communicating with the Gods and Goddesses, hence a bridge between the spirit and the living world.
As the balance of power change in the Old World, Elders and shamans felt the need to change and hide the original symbols to protect them, but in vain. The end of the rune as a divination tool finally came in 1639, when the Government of Iceland decreed that anyone found in possession of Runes would be burnt alive. With the end of the runes came the rise of the tarot. Many believe that hidden in the symbolic of the tarot are the symbols of the runes and their power.
Runes are more than a divination tool; they are oracles.
